Food and travel are two of the biggest costs in many Canadian budgets, so it makes sense that loyalty programs compete hard for both. Scene+ is one of the few that tries to cover the weekly grocery run and the yearly vacation with the same points balance.
How well it fits depends on where you shop, how you pay and how you like to travel. Here is a plain look at how the program works, where the points come from and what they are worth when it is time to book a trip.
How Scene+ Works for Everyday Canadians
Scene+ describes itself as a 100% Canadian loyalty program, and membership is free for anyone aged 14 or older. It grew out of the SCENE movie rewards program run with Cineplex and has expanded into a much wider network that includes grocery stores, pharmacies, restaurants, home improvement and travel.
Members collect points by scanning their Scene+ card or app at partner locations and by paying with an eligible Scotiabank card. Points can then be spent at many of those same partners, from Cineplex tickets and Home Hardware purchases to meals at more than 700 restaurants such as Swiss Chalet, Harvey’s, Montana’s and East Side Mario’s.
The appeal is simple. One balance builds up from many small purchases, and most of the common redemptions are worth about one cent per point.
Earning Points at the Grocery Store
Groceries are where Scene+ stands out. Its grocery partners include Sobeys, Safeway, IGA, FreshCo, Chalo! FreshCo, Foodland, Thrifty Foods, participating Co-ops, Rachelle Béry and Les Marchés Traditions, with in-store pharmacies at several of those banners also taking part.
One detail surprises many new members. According to Scene+, scanning your card at the till does not earn base points on its own. Base grocery earning comes from paying with a qualifying Scotiabank credit card, while the membership card earns extra points on marked items, flyer coupons, seasonal promotions and personalized weekly offers loaded in the app.
That is why the payment card matters so much. The Scotiabank Gold American Express Card earns 6 Scene+ points per dollar at Empire grocery stores such as Sobeys, IGA and Safeway, and 5 points per dollar at other eligible grocers, restaurants, food delivery and entertainment. Anyone weighing it up can read this Scotiabank Gold American Express Card review, which explains how those rates work alongside the card’s travel insurance and other features.
Redeeming at the checkout is just as easy. Scene+ lists 1,000 points as worth $10 off a purchase at participating grocery stores, in person or online through Voilà, so a busy month of family shopping can quietly turn into a free bag of groceries later on.
Turning Points Into Travel
Travel is the other half of the story. Through Scene+ Travel, powered by Expedia, members can book flights, hotels, car rentals and activities, and Scotiabank lists the value at 100 points for $1. Hotels, car rentals and things to do booked this way also earn points, so a trip paid in cash still adds to the balance.
On the Gold Amex, the accelerated categories cover a lot of ground beyond food. The card earns 3 points per dollar on gas, daily transit, rideshare and select streaming services, and 1 point per dollar on everything else. The higher rates apply to the first $50,000 of qualifying purchases each calendar year, which leaves plenty of room for most households.
The card also helps once you are away. It charges no foreign transaction fees, so purchases abroad are converted at the exchange rate without the 2.5% markup common on Canadian cards. It also includes emergency medical coverage of up to $1,000,000 per person for trips of up to 25 days for cardholders aged 64 and under, along with trip cancellation, flight delay and baggage coverage.
Where Scene+ Fits Best
Scene+ is strongest for people who already shop at Sobeys, Safeway, FreshCo or another Empire banner, and who would like their points to cover travel as well as daily costs. Because grocery and travel points come from the same pool, members do not have to choose between two programs or watch two balances.
The Gold Amex has an annual fee of $120, and Scotiabank notes that it can be waived with an eligible Scotiabank chequing account. The income requirement is low at $12,000. For a household spending a few hundred dollars a week on food, the 5x and 6x rates can add up quickly.
Like any credit card, it works best when the balance is paid in full each month. Before applying for any card, it is worth reading the plain language guides from the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada on Canada.ca, which explain interest charges, fees and how to compare credit products.
So, Is Scene+ the Right Choice?
For Canadians who want one program that rewards both groceries and travel, Scene+ is a very strong contender. Its grocery network is large, its redemptions are easy to understand, and travel bookings through Expedia let points cover more than just a single airline or hotel chain.
Paired with a card like the Scotiabank Gold Amex, the program can turn ordinary weekly spending into real savings on the next family trip. The best plan is to check where you shop most often, look at current offers, and choose the setup that fits the way your household already spends.
