Whether it’s for health and wellness or a brand new food creation, there’s something about cannabis that we cannot seem to get enough of. Everywhere you look, there is a hot new product fresh off the line that uses this key ingredient.

Take home cooking edibles, for example. In Denver and California, in particular, people can take a class centered around using cannabis in food. You can even buy cookbooks online and in stores across the nation to make your own from the kitchen.

The marijuana industry has come on leaps and bounds since the days where the stoners in college spent their time and student loans smoking it all day long. In fact, cannabis has been studied for many years in the medical field. It’s been found to relieve patients from stress and anxiety and has also been shown to reduce chronic pain and help to fight against serious illnesses and diseases.

As such, the cannabis business has begun to boom, and it hasn’t come a moment too soon.

Difference Between CBD and THC

If you watch TV shows from the early 90s, you will likely have seen cannabis used in brownies as a classic way to incorporate it into food. While there isn’t anything wrong with this, food products have come an awfully long way.

Scientists and researchers are now able to split the two main compounds found from a marijuana plant. These are THC and CBD – and there is a key difference between the two.

THC has several therapeutic benefits but is the compound in marijuana that gets you high. This is because THC is psychoactive. So, anyone that has been high from a cannabis product has been subject to high enough levels of THC.

On the other hand, the other compound CBD is not psychoactive, so it will not get you high, but researchers claim that still provides a number of health benefits like reduced anxiety, calming symptoms of ADHD and reduced soreness (a good overview of ADHD and CBD oil here).

For this obvious reason, marijuana in the form of CBD has gained a lot of interest and appeal. People can use it and enjoy the benefits without the fear of getting high and still perform as normal.

Now, it’s important to note here that the health benefits of CBD have not been proved in many significant, peer-reviewed studies (more on this in this article). The main reason for this is that marijuana remains a Schedule 1 controlled substance, even though the 2018 Farm Bill made hemp-derived CBD legal at the federal level.

To this point, the only FDA-approved use of cannabis and CBD is for a rare and severe form of epilepsy. Nevertheless, CBD oil is still a hot topic and many people want to see how it can help themselves.

Sephora And CBD

While CBD and other cannabis-infused products lack a lot of hard evidence to support these claims, there is more than enough enthusiasm to make up for it.

Consumers and retailers want to use CBD in a range of products to treat the various issues they may have, such as in skincare or just as regular oil droplets.

CBD is totally legal in some states in the US so it’s likely that if you live in one of them, you have probably seen at least it in one form or another.

According to Newsweek, CBD sales are predicted to grow 40-fold over the next four years into a $23 billion industry and it (along with the companies that produce it) will only continue to grow as more research is taken and information is shared.

Major stores in the US are selling CBD-infused products, including the likes of Walgreens and CVS. In the states where it’s legal, there are all sorts of concoctions like CBD cocktails to drink and coffee shops creating unique beverages.

Some of the biggest names in cosmetics like Sephora are also helping CBD go mainstream. In fact, Sephora has its own ‘Cannabis beauty’ section where you can find CBD-infused skincare products among others.

Reading the Newsweek article in more detail and you can see that other giant corporations are planning to bring out their own CBD products; for example, Coca Cola is set to release a CBD-infused drink.

As you can see, even though there is not much scientific evidence, it is not squashing people’s desire for the substance…

CBD Regulations

… except for the FDA. As mentioned previously, CBD is legal at the federal level but it is still being policed to a point where people are still being arrested for possessing it. Going forward, it’s likely that rules in connection with CBD will change again so it can be hard to keep track of what’s going on exactly.

However, since there are no regulations around CBD, the quality of each CBD product is left to be desired according to Kyro. Whether you are picking it up off the shelf or buying online, the quality can vary.

This has seen the FDA and other independent experts in the field raise concerns over the distribution of CBD in the US. Some companies are making outlandish claims about how their product can benefit the user, while others are not entirely consistent with the concentration of CBD compared to what is claimed on the label.

All in all, the lack of regulations around CBD means that those who consume CBD may not always know what they are buying.

But even though this is the case at present, it’s unlikely that it will remain this way forever. Sure, the FDA is going to pay more attention to illegal CBD and cannabis products now that there is a lot more interest in it compared to the past, but that only shows the significance it has in society right now.

The Bottom Line

CBD oil and CBD products are here to stay. Whether it’s in food or the next big beauty product, companies and consumers want it more than ever before. If it hasn’t already, it’s only a matter of time until it becomes available near you.
